Best Applications
As a primary lining material in high alkali environments (slag or gas) or in contact with moderately basic slags. Applications include:
- Black liquor boilers
- Cement kiln preheaters
- Incinerators and thermal oxidizers
- Biomass furnaces – slag zones
Product Information
Plicast® Si-Bond SP is a high alumina based, cement less castable, modified with a magnesium aluminate spinel addition. This castable was specifically developed for enhanced resistance to high alkali slags and alkali vapor attacks. In lab alkali slag cup tests versus more traditional high alumina cement bonded castable both with and without spinel additions, Plicast Si-Bond SP consistently:
- Retained slag
- Resisted alkali bursting – all cement bonded castables routinely burst due alkali absorption
These results were confirmed by independent testing at Missouri S&T (Rolla) in a DOE funded project for black liquor gasifiers.
Plicast Si-Bond SP out performed all other commercial castables tested in this project. As a result, there have been very successful commercial applications in black liquor boilers. In addition to its outstanding alkali resistance, Plicast Si-Bond SP also exhibits exceptional hot strength up through 2500°F.

Product Information: Plicast® Si-Bond M is a mullite based, cementless castable. Since it contains a minimal amount of lime and other alkalis, it’s matrix is resistant to high temperature fluxing. Plicast Si-Bond M also offers better resistance to slags that are acidic to neutral, as well as alkali attacks than a low or even ultra-low cement castables of a similar chemistry. Other product characteristics and benefits include:
- Excellent resistance to aluminum attack and corundum growth even at elevated temperatures
- High hot strength above 1500°F to 2500°F and above
- Enhanced mineralogy and low porosity for improved slag alkali resistance
- Good refractoriness under load
- Very good abrasion resistance
- Good volume stability
- Moderate thermal conductivity
- Quicker bake out than reduced cement castable options
- Plicast Si-Bond M has good flow and setting characteristics allowing it to be place by vibration, casting or pumping.
Available Internationally As: Plico® Castable Si-Bond M
