Plibrico Event Promotes Worksite Risk Reduction and
Improved Safety Performance
The Plibrico Company, a global supplier of industrial refractories, recently held an enterprise-wide “Safety Stand-Down” break where managers of its five construction offices shared the protocols Plibrico has put into place to reduce worksite injuries, provided updates on the company’s safety training, and commemorated safety milestones at their locations and the people who made them possible. Safety Stand-Down also served as a forum for Plibrico employees to ask questions and highlight concerns that foster transparency in the company’s workplaces.
As every safety professional knows, refractory construction is not without risk. Therefore, safety has long been a number one objective at the Plibrico Company. Because safety is so deeply engrained within its culture, Plibrico is one of the few organizations in the industry that has invested in a full-time, on-staff National Safety Manager, Chris Smith. Smith is knowledgeable on the most current safety regulations as they relate to refractory installation and construction, and is available to assist Plibrico employees in safety planning, training and safety monitoring before and during installation. Smith played a major role in making the first Safety Stand-Down a success.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over one-quarter of construction workers have been injured on the job. The top three leading causes of injuries – overexertion and bodily reaction, slips, trips and falls, and contact with objects and equipment – account for more than 84% of all nonfatal injuries involving days away from work and are commonly experienced in refractory construction. Safety Stand-Down provided a critical opportunity for managers to educate their crews on how to recognize these types of hazards, and most importantly, how to prevent them with the proper protocols to achieve an accident-free environment.
“Plibrico’s safety culture shows and grows at these meetings by helping to get employees aligned with its high standards,” said Brad Taylor, President & CEO of the Plibrico Company. “We plan on making Safety Stand-Down a permanent fixture in our calendars.”
