Product Information: Plicast® Si-Bond A RS is a high alumina based, cement-free castable, specifically designed for casting precast shapes.    Based on a tabular alumina aggregate, this material contains a minimal amount of lime and other alkalis, rendering its matrix very resistant to high temperature fluxing.   In addition, Plicast Si-Bond A RS is more resistant to slags (acidic through neutral) and alkali attacks than a low or ultra-low cement castable of a similar chemistry.   Other product characteristics and benefits include:

  • Excellent material for Precast Shapes
  • High hot strength 1500°F to 2500°F and above
  • High alumina mineralogy and low porosity for improved slag resistance
  • Resistant to alkali vapor attack
  • Good refractoriness under load
  • Very good abrasion resistance: 8 cc per ASTM C704
  • Good volume stability
  • Quicker bake-out than reduced cement castable options

  1. Precast Shapes
  2. Black liquor boilers
  3. Cement kiln preheaters
  4. Incinerators and Thermal Oxidizers
  5. Biomass furnaces – slag zones

Product Information: Plicast® Si-Bond SP RS is a high alumina based, cement-free castable, modified with a magnesium aluminate spinel addition.   This castable was specifically developed for enhanced resistance to high alkali slags and alkali vapor attacks.  In laboratory alkali slag cup tests versus more traditional high alumina cement bonded castables, both with and without spinel additions, Plicast Si-Bond SP RS consistently:

  • Retained slag
  • Resisted alkali bursting – all cement bonded castables routinely burst due alkali absorption

These results were confirmed by independent testing at the Missouri University of Science & Technology (MS&T)  in a DOE funded project for black liquor gasifiers.

Plicast Si-Bond SP RS outperformed all other commercial castables tested in this project.   As a result, there have been very successful commercial applications in black liquor boilers.   In addition to its outstanding alkali resistance, Plicast Si-Bond SP RS also exhibits exceptional hot strength up through 2500°F.
